Carpenter ants are one of the most destructive pests in Ontario. These large black ants (often measuring up to 5/8 of an inch) excavate wood to build their nests. Unlike termites, they don't eat the wood, but the resulting hollow galleries severely weaken the structural integrity of your home over time.
They are highly attracted to wood that has been softened by moisture. Common nesting sites include wood around leaky windows, damp roof eaves, behind dishwashers, and rotting porch supports. If you see large black ants in your home during the winter or early spring, it means you have an active nest inside your walls.
Our Carpenter Ant Elimination Process
Spraying visible carpenter ants with retail bug spray is ineffective and will not stop the damage occurring inside your walls. Apex Pest Control uses professional methods to destroy the queen and the entire nest.
- Inspection & Nest Locating: We track foraging ants and look for "frass" (sawdust) to locate the main nest and any satellite nests on the property.
- Targeted Baiting: We use specialized protein and sugar-based gel baits. The worker ants carry this toxic bait deep into the walls, feeding it to the queen and the larvae.
- Non-Repellent Exterior Perimeter Spray: We apply an invisible, non-repellent barrier around your foundation. Ants pass through it, become coated in the active ingredient, and spread it to other ants like a virus.
- Wall Void Dusting: If we locate the exact nest, we can drill small holes and inject insecticidal dust directly into the galleries for immediate knock-down.
