Professional Squirrel Removal Across Ontario

Squirrels are one of the most common wildlife pests affecting Ontario homes. Agile, persistent, and capable of fitting through surprisingly small openings, Eastern grey squirrels and red squirrels regularly access attics, crawl spaces, and wall voids through gaps along rooflines, roof vents, and fascia edges. Once inside, they cause damage that is often more serious than it appears — chewing electrical wiring, destroying insulation, and depositing waste material throughout the areas they inhabit.

Squirrel removal requires a specific approach that differs from other pest control. The animals must be removed humanely, all entry points must be sealed with materials that squirrels cannot chew through, and any structural damage must be assessed and repaired. A squirrel problem that is only partially addressed — where removal is done but exclusion is incomplete — will recur, often within the same season.

Why Squirrels Choose Attics

Attics are ideal squirrel habitat for the same reason they appeal to any den-seeking animal: they are warm, dry, protected from predators, and close to food sources. For Ontario squirrels, attic access typically occurs through damaged or missing roof vent covers, gaps between the fascia and roofline that develop as a house ages, deteriorated soffit panels, or the ends of roof-line drip edge where gaps are common.

Squirrel entry peaks during two periods: fall, when squirrels seek winter denning sites, and late winter/early spring, when females are searching for secure nesting locations to give birth. Squirrel litters typically arrive in February/March and again in July/August. If a female squirrel has young in your attic, removal becomes more complex and requires locating and addressing the young before completing the exclusion.

Risks of Untreated Squirrel Infestations

The two most significant risks of an untreated squirrel infestation in an attic are fire and structural degradation.

Fire hazard. Squirrels gnaw continuously, and electrical wiring is among the most commonly damaged materials in squirrel-infested attics. A single squirrel gnawing through wire insulation creates a short-circuit risk. Chewed wiring that goes undetected behind insulation is a leading cause of attic fires. Every squirrel infestation should prompt an inspection of accessible wiring in the affected area.

Structural damage. Squirrels shred and compress attic insulation for nesting material, dramatically reducing its thermal performance. They gnaw on wood framing, roof sheathing, and other structural members. In severe infestations, these cumulative effects represent significant repair costs well beyond the cost of early-stage removal and exclusion.

Our Squirrel Removal Process

  • Full Exterior Inspection: We inspect the entire roofline, all vents, fascia boards, soffits, and any visible gaps or damage. We identify every active and potential entry point.
  • Attic Inspection: We assess the interior of the affected space for nesting sites, young animals, waste contamination, and structural damage.
  • One-Way Exclusion Device Installation: Devices are installed at all active entry points. Squirrels exit through the device and cannot re-enter. Devices are left in place for two to three days minimum.
  • Baby Animal Assessment: If young are present, they are located and carefully removed from the attic as part of the process.
  • Permanent Entry Point Sealing: All entry points are sealed with heavy-gauge galvanized steel mesh or metal flashing after confirming the animals have exited. All secondary potential entry points are sealed at the same time.
  • Damage Assessment: We report on all structural damage and contamination found during the inspection and can assist with repair and restoration.
